' At the Commonwealth offices, in his address to the editors of twelve financial • papers on the subject of Australia's financial position and prospects, the Australian High Commissioner (Sir George R«id) concluded by stating that he had not invited them to interview him because he had received any instructions to prepare the way for a loan. He claimed that no country was in a sounder financial position than Australia. Her future did not depend on any one thing, but on, her enormous resources. Australia, he added, was not only loyal in providing for the defence of her commerce; she also showed a magnificent attachment ito the British people. . CONTROL OP THE NAVY. Melbourne, July 21. Referring to the remarks made at the Chamber of Commerce banquet by Sir Bichard Poore (Commander-in-Chief on the Australian Station), the Federal Prime Minister (Mr. Fisher) stated that the Australian Navy would be under the control of the Australian Government. He ■ hoped for the co-operation of the navies of the British possessions to preserve the peace of the world.
