- The annual report ou tho Cook Ia : lands -states that the export of oranges : for the year glided March 31 was 93,007 cases,'an increase -of 18,901 cases.. Tiie output of bananas was 98,934 cases'and 10,121! bunches, an i*iI crease of. 9495 cases. Rarotonga supplied an increase of 11,353 cases. Attention is drawn by the Resident Commissioner (Mr. J. Eman Smith) to the fact that, although New Zealand fruitgrowers are protected, growers in the Cook Islands (which is an iiitegral part ' of the .Dominion) are not. As the Cook Islands practically adopted the New Zealand Customs tariff,, the- trade <if the group ivas in the hands of New Zealand',traders and producers, yet, New Zealand allowed fruit from Australia, Fiji, Tonga, and French Society Islands, .which gave it no concessions, to be admitted on the -same basis a& \ iruit from tho Cook islands, with the result that often c-xporters from there found the New Zealand market ghvt ted. The Commissioner suggests t-'jat-a duty should be levied on oranges and bananas imported from outside the ■ Cook Islands from (say) March 1 to 'September 30 in each year.- Exempt-ion : '. is also taken to the fact that CookIsland fruitgrower is riot nllo-jrod the . concessions given the New Ze-jland orchardist'.on fruit passing over the Lyttelton to Christchurch line.
