THE KING'S OATH.

* ARCHBISHOP CARR'S VIEWS." INTENSE SATISFACTION. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Melbourne, July 19. In blessing a new convent, Archbishop Carr took opportunity of expressing the intense satisfaction of Roman Catholics at the prospective removal from tho British Constitution of the iniquitous terms of the Royal De--1 claration. When the oath Hvas framed !■ to secure Protestant: succession to tho Throne, it faithfully reflected the intolerance- of tho times, but since those days a much wider dominion was governed by tho King of England, and , ■ liberty of. conscience had been secured to all faiths excepting the Roman Catholic, which had been singled out for the most opprobrious epithets at the mosi joyous occasion in the life of each sovereign. The' State Premier (Mr. Murray) said the affirmations in the Coronation Oath were most objectionable, not only to millions of Catholics in tho Empire, but to millions of people of other nations vho were friendly with Britain, and to all-, right-thinking Christians. Any ordinary.citizen who used such words as were contained in fho affirmations towards his fellow citizens would bo given in charge for endeavouring to provoke a broach of "the peace. The 1 King should not be compelled to set . an example which his loyal subjects would be punished for following.
