A novel point was raised in an information heard in . the Magistrate's Court to-day, charging a broach of the Licensing Act in sending two packages into a No-License district without a statement thereon tliat_ the packages contained liquor. Tho .liquor, was packed in two boxes, which did' not have tho label which is usually attached, stating that they contained liquor. On one box, however, appeared tho words "Imperial Ale," and on tiio other "Glen Lion special whisky," which they really contained, but the words had been, branded on tho boxes when they wero originally packed by the makers of the ale and whisky. Mr. T.. M. Page, for defendant, contended that tho words: were sufficient indication that , tho packages contained liquor, otherwise how could the constable know? Tho magistrate (Mr. C. C. Graham) agreed with this contention, and dismissed, the information. At a meeting of ratepayers held at Alfredton on Saturday, .a motion was carried to the etfect that Alfredton riding secede from the Masterton county and amalgamate with Eketahuna county.

WAIHOANGA-.
An unusually wet period has been experienced hero lately. To illustrate tlio troubles which settlers have to contend with it may bo mentioned that Mr. H. Itay, who brought in a valuable floek of sheep early in the week had to swim them across a river ero he.could get them on his own property. With of some of the residents they were safely got over, not, however, without sundry mishaps. A loan of .£7OO is being, raised to make the road in here. I]t is to bo hoped that tho member for the district mil bo ablo to induce tho Government to grant a subsidy. "Gorge Mount," the residence of , Mr. I). Bockett, had a narrow escape from being bnrncd down a few days since. It appears that during the absence of, tlio owner a spark from the firo must' havo ignited some clothes which were drying. Jlr. Hurling, who was near by, seeing sinoko coming from. tho building,; rushed in and extinguished the flames. Not much damage was done, but tho loss would have been serious had aconflagration taken place, as the houso has only, been recently erected. Mr. M'Cheyn Murray, of Glenveigli, is at present on'a visit to Mana Island. It is hoped now that thn timber mill is in full work the now school will bo put in hand.. Local children have now been a long time without, any education whatever. > Mr. B. Bockett is laying out and planting an extensive" orchard in tho Waiotauro Valley round his residence. It should do well owing to the mildness of the climate. ■
