NOTES AND COMMENTS.

i TO-MORROW'S STEEPLECHASE, > (Br Umncoe.) Considerable interest centres in.- tomorrow's contest for tho Wellington Steeplechase, for which a big'field promises to go to tho post. Nero, who recently won threo cross-country events, went lame on Sunday, and was scratched yesterday morning, but there still remain sixteen horses in tho'cVent., and probably moro than 'a dozen will go to the post. ■ Some of the candidates havo previously- competed- 'in thosievent. ICiatero won on the old Hutt course in 1901, and again in 1905. Loch I'yne ran sccond .'to Nadador in 1908,- and Capitol - was among tlie unplaced division in last year's race. 'l'hero was a fair crowd of visitors to Trentham yesterday to sco the -"ohasors get through their .final, gallops. There had been a frost during the night, and tho ground was still white, right up till half-past oight o'clock in tho morning. The going was very ' heavy, especially down , the back stretch, where tho horses could bo heard splashing fetlock deep. Kintere, top-weight in . the Steeplechase, went a couplo of rounds, and moved pleasingly. Audax (A. Julian) galloped two rounds with the pace clapped on. He hit out very "boldly, but on pulling up was very lame, : and was led back to tho paddock. , Loch Fyno was expected at Trentham last night. Eurus (Holmes) galloped two rounds with Northern Star and Wnitapu (Jumpers' Flat,). Waitapu finished better than Northern Star, while Eurus was tailed off. Lavoll (11. Telford) galloped two rounds, finishing in good style. Waiono was exorcised on tho roads. Maidi (Abbott) did a circuit on tho flat. Bcelino (A. Julian) traversed, two rounds at three-quarter pace, having Tina Tea for company over the last mile Rod M'Gregor (Windsor), Corazon (R. Gray), Full Cry (R. Tomoana), Southern Cross (Percival); and Lo Beau (Jones) were sent out to jump eight fences in company. Red M'Gregor started a chain behind-the ■ others. Southern - Cross as usual refused at the first fence. Corazon, Le Beau, and Full Cry took tho first couplo of fences together, with Red M'Gregor following. At the top of tho course Le Beau went out in front and fenced beautifully all the way. He was allowed to miss tho logs, whero he came to grief on a'previous..occasion. Corazon showed much better than Full Cry, while Red M'Gregor gave a taste, of his staying capabilities by finishing strongly. Le Beau, it should bo noted, is not engaged in to-morrow's race. Capitol (P. Brady) jumped six fences by himself. Ilis fencing was almost perfect, and lie is evidently none tho worse for his fall last weolc. Southern Cross has so persistently refused to. tackle the big country in his schooling tasks at Trentham that numerous flat jockeys have expressed ■ their willingness to ride him in to-morrow's steeplechase, for which the "losing" fee is dt'G. F. Porter leaves Gisborno for Lyttelton to-morrow with tho Grand National favourite Te Arai. Sir Frisco was looking remarkably well when worked at Trentham yesterday morning, As tho Porirua stablo has no representative in-the Waterloo Handicap to-morrow, G'. Jenkins will have tlie mount on Sir Frisco. Neither Wauchopo not Gold Battery is engaged in tho Waterloo Handicap, rilid therefore it .is quite on tho cards that California will bo ridden by Hector Gray. W. Young will rido Mahuta •in the Jumpers' Flat Handicap at Trentham tomorrow. PlaJ-mate galloped well yesterday morning, in company with a couple of other horses, but tho Stepniak gelding was lame on pulling up. As Tauira is not among the acceptors for the Jumpers' Flat to-morroiv, it looks as if he will not bo started again until tho Grand National. Feu do Joie has been suffering from kidney trouble siuco arrival at Trentham, hciice her withdrawal from the Winter Hurdles 011 Saturday. Master Paul, who is engaged in tho Hack Hurdle Race at Trentham to-mor-row, will be ridden by I J . Brady. The Auckland horse is in receipt of 281b. from Oxton, tho top-weight. Waitapu, who has only l»en allotted ()3t. 13lb. in the Jumpers' Flat Handicap at Trcnthnm to-morrow, won the Jumpers' Flat at tho Ellerslio meeting last month. Ilis past victories include the Dnnnevirke Cup (twice), Taranaki Cup, and several other good handicaps. Tho.New .Zealand Trotting Conference delegates meet in Wellington to-day.
