PICTON'S MARITIME AIMS.
OVERTIME TO AVANGANUL
(By Telegraph—Special Correspondent.)
• Wanganui, July im The matter of transhipping charges was discussed by the Chamber of Commerce to-day, following on the receipt of a letter, from the Picton Chamber drawing attention to the advantages of Picton as a shipping port.- The letter stated that new -wharfage, suitable ior the largest vessels visiting Xew Zealand, ■ was in course of construction by the Government, but tho rale of progress was altor gether too slow. As Wanganui and surrounding districts were considerably affected by the of other ports with regard to transhipments, etc., there was no reason why- Picton should not take their place, and the Picton Chamber therefore invited the co-operation of the Wanganui Chamberin urging the Government to speedily complete the work. Jlr., T. B. Williams, president of the local Chamber, expressed the opinion that in. the not distant future Wanganui would -not be dependent upon other ports. If Wanganui had a good harbour • it would be in a position to cater for the West . Coast trade , of the Tvorth Island. Also it was only, a five-hour run in smooth water from. Wanganui to the South Island, and sumo Uaj when the South Island Trunk line was through a valuable trade would be opened up between the two 1 places. It -was decided to forward the- Picton letter to tho member for Wanganui, asking him to co-operate with PictonV representative in tile House on the lines suggested in the letter.
