His Excellency Lord Islington lias signified hi.-, acceptance of the position of president of the lloyal New Zealand Association of His ilajesty's Veterans.

The many friends of Mr. H. D. Bell will be gratified to learn that he has now practically recovered from his serious illness. He intends to leave 011 a trip to Australia and the Islands at the end. of next week.

The resignation of Mr. Colvin, M.P., as a member of the Westport Harbour Board, a position which he has held for 23 years, was received with regret last evening. As there are two other vacancies 011 the board caused by the death of the Hon. Mr. Reeves and Mr. J. Suisted, the board has now only a bare quorum, but it'is anticipated that fresh appointments will be made this week.—Press Association.

Mr. It. Mill, accountant in the Bank of New Zealand in Wellington, is to be transferred to London, there to he associated with the managerial head of that office. . 'l'he appointment of a New Zealander to a position in London is a new departure, but it is' considered advantageous that there shuuld be someone in the Loudon office ivith an accurate and. up-to-date knowledge of affairs in NewZealand. Mr. Mill was transferred from Dunedin to Wellinston. a lew months ago.

Mr. J. A. C. M'Eldowney, who is leaving Messrs. Sargood, Son, and Ewen, Ltd., alter twenty-two years' service, was farewelled bj members oi' the firm and staff last night. 111 making a presentation, Mr. H. tj. Tewsley spoke in the highest terms of Mr. M'Eidowney's business ability arid social qualities. Messrs. Austin, (Jphiiui, Ki'rker, and Fhilpot also expressed their regret at parting with a fellow employee so'universally respected. The presentation from the staff consisted uf a solid silver tea service, and a gold double sovereign case, and a cheque was presented by the firm. Mr. M'Eldowney, who expressed the regret he felt in partijiK from ho many friends of long standing, leaves for Englaud, via Sydney, 011 Friday.

Mr. G. D. Hamilton has been appointed acting-lieutenant in the Heretaunga Mounted Rifles.

Mr. Chas. W. Isitt., brother of the Revs. F. W. and L. >M. Isitt.. .a well-known local preacher, and formerly clerk to the School Bon rd for London, is about to take a trip to-New Zealand. Sirs. Isitt and their son and daughter will accompany Mr. Isitt.

Writing to a friend, Mr. Ambrose Manning, the well-known actor, who visited New Zealand with Mr. Wilson Barrett some years ago, states that he has been engaged by Mr. J. C. Williamson to appear in the big Drury Lane drama, "The Whip," in Australia. Mr. Ambrose Manning was the original Glabrio in' "The Sign of the Cross,and his Caesar Cregeen in "The Manxman" was a very fine example of character acting.

The Iviwatea County Conucil has selected Mr. H. W. Campbell as its new engineer. Mr. Campbell, who Is under thirty years of age, and a native of Wanganui, is the second son'of Mr. E, E. M. Campbell, one of the .oldest surveyors in the Dominion. For the last three years Mi\ Campbell has been engineer to the Waimarino County Council, and for most of that time he was also clerk and treasurer to tho council. Prior ,to that Mr. Campbell acted as field assistant to his father. i

The death is announced of Mr. W. Hutchings, an old and widely respected citizen of Wellington, who passed away at his residence, ■ Sussex' Square, on Saturday last, after an- illness of several months. Deceased leaves > a widow and seven children, two sons and five daughters, among whom are Mr. W. C. Hutchings, of the Sun Insuratice Company, jAuckland, j£ r . John Hutchings, u well-known local cricketer, Mrs. W. A. Par ton, iUrs. W. S. Cuthbertson, and Mrs. A. G. Mann, of Auckland.

Mr. Maughan Barnett left for the south last evening to give a series of recitals in the First Church, Dunedm.

Mr. ,Tohn Rowe, president of the New Zealand Trotting Conference, arrived from Auckland by the Main Trunk express yesterday afternoon. ■

The Rev. W. A. Heighway, of- the Foreign Mission Society, from Fiji, who arrived in Auckland last week, will make a somewhat lengthy stay in the province.
