Advlco has been received by tho Marine Department to tho effect that tho Tuahlne Light (near Gisborne) is at the present time unreliable. Tho light, which was designed to be an occulting . one, is now showing a fixed' light, and tho keeper is unable to reach it owing to slips, which may bring the structure down. ' WHANGAEOA LEFT SYDNEY. A cablegram from Sydney states that the scow Whangaroa left there on Friday Inst for Wellington.- She brings a cargo of hardwood. CABLE STEAMER IRIS. H.M. cable steamer Iris returned to Wellington on Saturday .from tho Tasinin Sea, where she had been engaged in repairing the Eastern Extension Cable Company's cable. The work, which wa3 successfully carried out, occupied seven days, tho cable having to be raised from a. depth of 480 fathoms. The Iris mado a brief stay at Wellington on Saturday, and then left for Auckland. Early yesterday morning tho Sha*, Savill,' and Albion Company's steamer TVaiwcra arrived from Gisborne, and took up an anchorage in the stream. Sho will berth to-day, and after loading at tms port will proceed to Bluff. While at Bluff, Iho New Zealand Shippirfg Company's Ruapehu shipped 54,150 carcasses mutton and lamb, 39 carcasses pork, 1939 crates rabbits, 12(1 quarters beef, 1516 pieces mutton, 511 bales wool, 7 cesks tallow, 200 sacks oats, 1 sack seed, 25 bass manure, and 2 cases sundries. ,The whole of the cargo was shipped at two hatches in 41 working hours, or at the rate of 1500 packages per Hour, and the steamer was able to leave on Wednesday evening last for Auckland. To the steamer Inveran belongs the distinction o£ taking the largest cargoes of phosphates that have ever boon dispatched from Ocean Island in one bottom (rays a Melbourne papal'). On her two last visits to Melbourne the Inveran has broueht 0900 tous of tho product each trip, or 13,800 tons in all. The phosphates carried by this vessel are, moreover, said to bo higher in quality than any ever proviouely shipped from either Ocean or Mauru Islands. Captain Glasson, a popular visitor to Australian ports, is in command of the Inveran. Although still a comparn. tivcly young man, his connection with shipping goes back to 1877, when, as an apprentice, ho arrived here irom Liverpool in tho immigrant shin Hospodir with 518 men, women, and children as passengers aboard. At Inter periods Captain Ulnssan was associated .with the "Blackball" liner Iron Duke and the Edcuhall (of Liverpool). /
Saturday's arrivals included tho Holm-'* dale, from Hoklauga. Khe brought a full cargo of timber. On Thursday last the French barque Bossnet was gaily decked in bunting at Dunedln In lonour of the fall of the Bastile, an historical event which is celebrated annually as a French national holiday. In connection with this barque it is understood that the Harbour Hoard will, in consequence of conflicting statements, hold a departmental inquiry Into tne circumstances connected' with the grounding of the vessel when she arrived at Dunedin. The Aparlnia is due at Calcutta, to-day. She is to sail from that port for New Zealand, via Singapore and Samarang, on August 1. ' ■ • Owing to the continued bad weather at Napier, it is still uncertain when the Fed-oral-Houlder-Shiro liner Nairnslilro will arrive at Wellington. .
