9 • WORK OF THE YEAR. According to the annual .report of; Scenic Reserves Department, the land reserved for scenic purposes in Alew Zealand amounts to 40,546 acres. During the year ended March 31, 191U, 3470 acres were reserved, and J.JU acres were withdrawn from, reservation. In addition to these areas, many scenio reservations have boon made under the Land Act, 1892, between the passing of that Ac/ and the general operation of the Scenery Preservation Act, about 85,000 acres of Crown land being thus retained, in its natural state. ilia bulk of the reserves are composed of land unsuitable for close settlement. The total expenditure for the twelve months was £5775, of which compensation for land absorbed £16SS. During the year some very pretty forest areas have been set aside. Iα tho Auckland district two sections of the Schvyn Estate, on the ■ RotoruaRechneld" Road, two small areas of bush in the vicinity of the Waitomo Caves, and a small piece of Native land, adjoining Lake Rotorua were added to the existing reserves. In Taranaki three sections of Crown land were proclaimed. In the Wellington district the Whariti Mountain (Woodvillc) and the Manawatu Gorge and six other areas wore reserved.. The famous Peel Forest in Canterbury was purchased, and two small areas of freehold in Otago completed the reservations.
