TESTS FOR-JERSEYS.
ASSOCIATION'S RESTRICTIONS. At 'the annual meeting of the New Zealand Jersey' Breeders' Association, Mr. &.. Buchanan, of Palmerston North, proposed a motion: "That no animal should jeeeivo the association's gold medal unless it could yield Hlb. of butter-fat on a seven .days' test." He pointed out that. the animal which won under present conditions, would excel in type, constitution, and dairy farm utility, but they should also be perfectly certain that she was a prolific butterfat " yieldcr. Some members objected that it would stop' two-year-olds from obtaining the medal. Another objection was that tho test was for' too, short a, period. On Mr. E., Griffiths's suggestion tho motion was amended making the test.one of 121b. for two-year-olds, 131b. for 3-year-olds, and 141b. for cows four years and over. In that form it was carried. ■ [Br Abrangeitent.] One of the features of the show is Messrs. Levin and Co., Ltd.'s exhibit of : Sheep Shearing Machines, Separators, etc. There are two types of driving gear, the Patent Skew Belt and 'tho Lister Standard gear. The former impresses one at onco by its simplicity and silent running qualities, and is specially suitable for low and frad woolsheds, in as much as no strengthening of walls is required, and it. can bo installed in sheds that are too low to take ordinary shearing machinery without raising the roof of the woolshed. Moreover, thero is nothing in this gear to get out of true, as is the case with friction driven gear. A glance at the Lister tube is quite sufficient to commend it as the- best tube yet placed on the New Zealand market. It .is evident that no "pulley" or "tie-backs". will be required by the shearer' for this tube. ' Tho Lister shear ha-s many advantages which enable the cost of maintenance to be kept down,. and vibration has been-reduced to a minimum. It is built on'the model of, a Wolseley No. 3 pattern shear, with certain modifications, which, in the opinion of Messrs. Levin and Co., Ltd., will be much appreciated by users. All its parts, however, are interchangeable with the Wolseley No. 3 pattern shear. The Lister combs and cutters are practically perfect, being specially designed to meet the requirements of the shearer. They, are easy to get into tho wool, keen cutters, and consequently ensure big tallies. The Lister grinder has a special device to take the end play and save rebushing at the end of shearing—always a troublesome business. • Though only in the first year of its existence, tho Lister has reached the, top rung of the ladder, and' already holds tho New Zealand record for sales of complete stands in any one year up to Apnl 30. Messrs. L-svin and C 0.,. Ltd., Wellington, aro tho sole agents in Now Zealand, and aro prepared to guarantee satisfaction; and as they have had over 20 years' experience as agents for the Wolseley Sheep Shearing Machine, and have installed more shearing machines than all other firms in New Zealand combined, it is hardly necessary to say that thoir opinion carries considerable weight. A special feature of thoir business is the opportunity given to olionts or thoir omployees to booomo sufficiently experienced in running tho shearing machines as to mako them independent of expert assistance. This tuition is carried out undor the supervision of Mr. Alex. Hutchinson and a competent staff of exports, free of ch'argo, and when wo mention that nearly one hundred pupils vvero put through a courso of instruction last year ; it will roadily bo seen that this adjunct to tho business' meets with duo appreciation. Messrs. Lister and Co., Ltd., are one of tho oldest Cream Separator Manufacturers in England, and a look at their dairying appliances would bo time well upent by anyone wanting something in this lino. Tho Lister Co. are also responsible for a special line of 2J, 4, 6, and 8 B.H.P. Oil Engines, which will enhance this old-established firm's reputation ,fbr turning out the highest quality of 'jiachinory only. Altogether, tho Lister stand is one of (he most interesting and attractive exhibits at this year's Winter Show, and ■j visit to it should on no account bo. missed. '
