BRANDING PEDIGREE CATTLE.

INTERESTING DISCUSSION. An interesting discussion on tho branding of pedigree cattle took place at the annual meeting of th»- New Zealand Jersey Cattle. Breeders' ' Association at New Plymouth on Wednesday. Mr. J. O: Balchelor, of Palmerston North, moved: "That, in future," no transfer be accepted either for record or breeding purposes in tho New.Zealand Jersey Herd Book unless such animal is plainly branded or numbered with the breeder's registered brand, according to the stock vet." In supporting his motion,: Mr. Batchelor said that, through witliu being not branded, they could easily have a grade passed off as a pedigree animal. Tho chief objection raised against branding was that of -disfigurement. ' On tho table there were laid specimens of leather car-tags, which could bear tho owner's iiamo on one side and tlio herd book number of the beast on the other. It woa urged, however, that the ear-tags would not preclude fraud, and the meet-' ing was in favour of obtaining an idea which would prevent fraud being committed. It was left to the council to dsviso a suitable scheme after receiving the opinions. of tho branches. ,
