GOVERNMENT DAIRY HERDS.
HOLSTEINS PURCHASED. Tho Minister for Agriculture (the Hon. Tlios. Mackenzie), speaking at. the opening of the Dominion Dairy Show at Hawera yesterday, said tliat it might interest the people to know that lie had bought yesterday ten thoroughbred Holstein cows, for which he had paid JMO each. He wished to establish in various parts of New Zealand dairy herds of a reliable milking strain in order that the fanners might have sonic reliance in tho stock they put their money into. Tho Minister has not said so officially, but there is an impression abroad that the Holsteins were purchased from Mr. J. Origg, of Longbeach, from whom tho Holstein cows at Wcreroa State Farm wero obtained. [By Arrangement.] One of tho features of the show is Messrs. Levin and Co., Lkl.'s exhibit of Sheep Shearing Machines, Separators, etc. There aro two types of driving gear, the Patent Skew Jielt and tho Lister Standard gear. The former impresses one at once by its simplicity and silent running qualities, and is specially suitable for low and frail woolsheds, in as much as no strengthening of walls is required, and it can bo installed in sheds that aro too low to take ordinary shearing machinery without raising the roof of tho woolshcd. Moreover, there is nothing in this gear to get out of true, as, is tho cose with friction driven gear. A glance at tho Lister tnbo is quito snfliciont to command it as tho best tube yet placed on tho New Zealand market. It is evident that no "pulloy" or "tic-hacks" will be required by tho shearer for this tube. Tho Lister shear has many advantages which onablo tho cost of maintenance .to be kept down, and yibratkai.
has been reduced to a minimum. It is built on tho model of a AVolselcy No. 3 pattern shear, with certain modifications, which, in tho opinion of Messrs. Levin and Co., Ltd., will bo much appreciated by users. All its parts, however, aro interchangeable with tho Wolseley No. 3 pattern shear. 'fhe Lister combs and cutters aro practically perfect, being specially designed to meet the requirements of the shearer. Tliey aro easy to get into tho wool, keen cutters, and consequently ensure big tallies. The Lister grinder has a special device to tako the end play and save rebushing at the cud of shearing—always a troublesome business. Iliough only in the first year of its existence, the Lister has reached tho top rung of tho ladder, and already holds tho New Zealand record for sales of complete stands in anv one year up to April 30. Messrs. Levin and Co., Ltd., Wellington, arc the solo agents in New Zealand, and aro prepared to guarantee, satisfaction; and as they have had over 20 years' experience as agents for tho Wolseley Sheep Shearing Machine, and have installed moro shearing machines than all other firms in New Zealand combined, it is hardly necessary to say that their opinion carries considerable weight. A special feature of their business is the opportunity given to clients or their employees to become sufficiently experienced in running the shearing machines as to make them independent of expert assistance. This tuition is carried out under the supervision of Mr. Alex. Hutchinson and a competent staff of experts, free of charge, and when wo mention that nearly one hundred pupils were put through a course of instruction last year, it will readily bo seen that- this adjunct- to the business meets with due appreciation. Messrs. Lister and Co., Ltd., aro one of the oldest Cream Separator ?>lanufacturers in England, and a look at their dairying appliances would be time well spent by anyone wanting something in this line. The Lister Co. are also responsible for a special line of I\, 4, 6, and 8 B.H.P. Oil Engines, which will enhanco this old-established firm's reputation for turning out the highest quality of machinery only. Altogether, tho Lister stand is one of tho most interesting and attractive exhibits at this year's Winter Show, and a visit to it should on no account be missed.
