THE DAIRY PRODUCE.

GREAT DISPLAY IN TWO CLASSES. PIHAMA'S SUCCESS IN BUTTER. The dairy produce display is ono of the finest which has been made in New Zealand. There are sixty-nine entries in cheeso and forty in butter. There was strong competition from outside the province, , but ,tho Taranaki factories more than held their own. , Ngaire' won the championship in cheese, and the manager (C. C. Robertsou) took the challenge cup donated by the licensed victuallers' of Hawera. D. Ogilvy,' manager of the Cardiff factory, got the first leg in for the Henry Lane challenge cup (,£SO) by winning two of the open competitions. . Pihama had a brilliant win in butter, scoring first in the three competitions. This -following on the triple win at the "Waikato Winter Show and previous successes is a. great, victory for the maker, J. O'Dea wins the Gillies and Nalder cup and holds the Taranaki Camerated Concrete Company's cup. Tho Dairy Commissioner, Mr. D. Cuddie, said that the exhibits were greater numerically than one would expect to see at the opening event of a new winter show society, and the committee were to be congratulated on the splendid entries in this branch. Not only wero the exhibits numerous, but the quality was, on the whole, excellent. In the aasc of butter practically tho whole department was composed of really fine articles. Of the prize-winning lots, some wore considerably above tho average. The judges also spoke highly of the cheeso exhibits. Ono noticeable feature, they said was tho degree of uniformity evidenced in the manufacture. Many of .the entires would almost lead one to believe that they came from the same factory. The judges considered that the daily produce section was a great' credit to the dairy companies and their managers, and they congratulated them on the interest they have taken in getting up their exhibits for the show. The cheese, when staged, presented a very fine appearance and the judges were able to allot full points in most cases for finish, which is very creditable to the makers. "Shows," said the commissioner, "appear to be having a marked inilueneo in raising the quality of the butter, and the competitions are no doubt conducive to improvement in the quality. That must have a good result on tho butter and. cheeso exported to the British market." The details of the competitions are as follow :— SINGLE CHEESE. 701b., Open to All New Zealand. uti . .
