DANNEVIRKE A. & P. SOCIETY.
FIB ST ANNUAL REPORT. Tho first annual report of the Dannevirko A. and F. Society, which was submitted at the annual meeting of members on Saturday contained tho follow-, nig, inter alia: —
Tho preliminary steps towards the formation of an association were taken at a meeting, held on October 15 last, and since then matters have so far progressed that it has become ■established on a good working basis, with a membership sufficiently large • to warrant tho most sanguine expectations for future success, and tho initial show has taken place under encouraging auspices. Visitors were attracted in large numbers, and the attendance on the occasion easily established a record for any public function held in Dannevirke up to the present time. Members' subscriptions have been paid to tho number of 355.
' l'ho question of a suitable sit© for a show ground was one of tho first to claim the committee's attention, and after careful consideration it was decided to accept the-oft'or of the Domain Committeo of tho Dannevirbe Borough Council, whereby the' association was granted the use of the recreation ground under very favourable conditions. The donations towards the prize fund reached a handsome sum, and enabled the association to offer prizes for the first show of a total value of about .£l5O. In addition to tho amount shown in the balance-sheet as having been paid out, challenge cups and trophies were awarded to the, value of .£55. "While in a good many classes there v\\s an absence of competition, the entries on the whole were extremely satisfactory, notably in the hunters' competitions, hack, and dairy cattle classes. Having now proved what can be done, it is confidently expected tbat the next show will bring out entries in excess of last, and more generally representative of tho stock produced in the district. "The show took place on February It, and the ram fair on the following day, both being successful beyond all expectations. The number of sheep submitted at tho ram fair totalled 1232, and a very large proportion found buyers. The 'result was a net profit of .£22 Is. 6d. , "As the final result of the year's operations, profit and loss account shows a credit balance of' i 433 Bs. od. The assets are > represented by yards and material to the value of '.£225, •furniture £1 14s. 6d'., outstanding dues .£ls fc., while there is a credit balance in the Bank of New Zealand of JEI92 13s. 3d.this latter including tho sum of .£7 as. subscriptions and donations paid in advance for tho coming year. "The opinion having ' been' expressed that tho association might take some active part in connection with technical education in so far as agricultural and pastoral industries arc affected, your committee, on- the invitation of the High School Board of Governors to nominate a representative on the Technical School Committee of Management, appointed Mr. J". A; Robertson. "The general results for the yeaT are extremely gratifying, and your committee see no reason why, with a continuance of the enthusiasm which has so far directed its affairs, the association sliould not come into the front rank and provo itself an institution of which the whole disilict may very justily be proud."
