JERSEY BREEDERS.
NEW PLYMOUTH CONFERENCE. . HEED BOOK -MATTERS. The annual meeting of the New Zealand Jersey Cattlo Breeders' Association will bo held at Now Plymouth today. Mr. J. A. M , brea > .. i 9J,.Pnlraerstou North, will preside,'and "delegates representing the whole of the"' branches arc expected to attend.' —
' The balance-sheet states '"Hhat the revenue for the year amounted to £244, besides cash and £G5 brought forward from tho preceding, year,,,.,. The total expenses were £146. At the end of tho financial year there was a credit balance of £169. The, sum of £100 lias been placed on deposit with the Union Bank for twelve months, and'tho surplus over ■ liabilities amounts : to £331. Tho following is an extract .from the annual report:—"On behalf' of tho Editing Committee,.the,.bojiiicil desires .to draw tho;attention'."of:,'breeders to -certain matters in connection with tho entries of ca-ttlo in tho' Herd Book. All entries must be. made by tho owner, on the forms provided for tho purpose by tho association,"and must, bo correctly filled.'in, and. signed;. otherwise tho entries' -will- be till corrected. It is absolutely necessary that Jersey Herd Book numbers, only should be filled in wherever asked for on tho form. In the caso' of old animals, or those being' entered for reference for the first.time, there should be qttached to the entry form all documents wlu'ch the owner, possesses, -such as., sale notes and "receipts, 'breeder's'.';' pedigree, or certificate, etc., together with an affidavit testifying to their genuinenoss. There is also one other serious matter that must bo stopped at once, viz., tho attempt to can - }' on a name by means of numerals on the part of more than one owner at a time. Say a breeder, adopts Rosebud, he continues 1, 2, 3, and so. on,: and then ho sells Rosebud 6th. purchaser must'not continue the Rosebud line by further numerals. Tho name Bilberry is a case in point, and is bound to-cause confusion in tho future. The council mil confer with the local branches, at an early date on the adoption of a system)of registration of exclusive names or prefixes, as is adopted by the English and New Zealand Kennel Clubs."
Mr..- M'Ciea, the president, will not stand for the presidency .this year, and Messrs. ■S. i R.J., Lancaster., and A. Buchanan retire from the council. .For the three vacancies thus ■ Messrs. S. R. Lancaster, A. Buchanan, J. A. M'Crea, and J. 0. Batchelor have been nominated,' and a close contest is expected.
According to the- order paper, Mr. E, Griffiths will move, as a recommendation that, the regulations he altered to provide that 'the fees for all "animals entered for registration which, at the time of application, are more than twelvo months old,' shall be double the orclinary rates, 'and that no such' application ; be registered l unless and until the animal' lias been inspected and unanimously approved ,by a committee'of three expert-members appointed by tho council for-the purpose.. The Manawatu sub-branch submit the following recommendations for. future entries''and transfers'--'in-' the' Jersey Herd Book;-—"All entries must bo approved by a committee' selected' for tho purpose by the local sub-branch to sefollowing .points:—(a) That no malformed animals','or''animals''not conforming to the correct type, be admitted to registration; (b) that the council formulate some scheme of branding or indentifying so as to secure ..purity of pedigree." . Mr., J. 0. .Ba-tchelor will move that it be a recommendation that, in .future, no transfer be accepted either "for. record or breeding purposes in the New Zealand Jersey Herd Book unless such animal is' plainly.'branded -or. numbered with tho owner's registered brand, according 'to the' Stock" Act.
Mr. «A. Buchanan will move, a-s a recommendation; that, on and after 1911, the association's champion medal for cow be not awarded unless -the cow has an, authenticated test of not less than ■,141b. of butter-fat for seven days.
The menibership';6f the association lias "increased since';' the end of the financial year, on' May 31, by aboui thirty,, and the- totid membership is now about : 140. There'fare now branches at Auckland, „ Wairarapa, Ealmorston •North;;'Nejv Plyrnoutli; I :'and ,<jii6.;in the South' Island. An': attempt* was recently made to form a branch' 1 at and was successful - ; in • every - sense, except that the procedure could not" he legally recognised by the .association, ]"and the matter will have to be gone over again.
