HOSPITALS FOR ARRIVALS;
A MELBOURNE IDEA. A proposal put before.the Melbourne University.' Council by the director of the Veterinary' School (Professor J. A; . Gilruth) is that there should be in con- . nection with the school a sort of outpatients' department," where suffering iorses and other animals can be treated free of cost to the owners —always prc- - . vided that the owners are not in a financial position to pay. for such treat- , inent. Professor Gilruth remarked to a representative of the Melbourne "Age :—"ln Victoria there are more .... lame horses than in any other place I '.have been, Naples alone excepted. As '.a rule, the owners cannot afford to have them scientifically treated. This means unnecessary suffering. It would be a good thing; in my opinion, good •; not only for the horses, but for the' practical work of the Veterinary School, if some arrangement could be made by ■which these horses could be brought up for treatment, and dealt with by our advanced students, who would thus gain experience while, they were helping the dumb creation. The. proposal , is, in short, , that there should be an , out-patients' department in connection with our work, ju6t as there is at hospitals for human beings. Of course, there would, require to be' safeguards. . \Ve do not .;waht".every.possessor of »a lame horse,or sick.dog.to think he has the right.to 'come to .us-for', treatment free of charge/' Under l ' proper • conditions, however, I think.the-plan.a, very 'r desirable one,in the-interests of science 'and humanity." ." •;'
