DEBATING SOCIETIES.

The first round of tho annual tournament under tho auspices ol the Wellington Literary and Debating Societies' Union was held last night. Representatives of tho 'Wellington Catholic Club were pitted against Y.M.C.A. representatives, at St. Patrick's Hall, Boulcott Street. The motion for debate was:

"That, for New Zealand, the unicameral system of Legislature is preferable to the bicameral." The affirmative was taken by the Catholic Club, anil the aegativo by the r.M.C.A. Mr. A. H. Casey presided, and Mr. P. C. Preeth acted as judge. Tho debate was awarded to the Catholic Club by the narrow majority of three points, tho marks being as follow:— Catholic Club: Boyce 71, Duggan 87, Butcher 78, team's general arrangement ]■>; total, 254. Y.M.C.A., Dickinson 81, Ponder 81, Micldin 72, team's general arrangement 11; total, 251.
