TO SAVE THE NATIVE RACE.

VIEWS KAIHAU. Mr. Kaihau, M.P., in the course of an interview the other day, declared that should the suiicmu formulated In Mahuta and himself become law, the Native owners of surplus lands would put them into the hands of tho proposed district council, and in tho minimum oi time these lauds would become available for settlement. Previous to this conference the Natives would not sell at any price, but since tho new policy was initiated the Natives showed their eagerness for its inception by placing in his hands, and in those of the committee, large areas for partition. His people desired the Government to give their transactions the sanction of tho law; but if the Government were opposed to the scheme, or caused undue delay, the committee was of opinion that it had power, under tho most recent Acts, to deal with the lands brought before it for partition. It is conceded on all hands, continued Mr. Kaihau, that the adoption of the policy, as outlined, will prove the salvation of those who adopt it, for from the sale of surplus lands sufficient capital will be forthcoming to enable farmers to prosecute farming on the lands reserved in an up-to-date and scientific manner. Hβ suggested to the council that they would do well to rc?A!ryi> 30,000 or 40,000 acres for the cultivation uf sugar-beet, thus establishing an industry that would suit the Natives admirably, create employment for the landless, and enable even the smallest owner to utilise every acre.
