POLITICAL NOTES.

CHAIRMANSHIP OF THE HOUSE. THE CANDIDATES. HAEBOUE BOARD EEPEESENTATION There will probably be only two candidates for tbo position of Chairman of Committees of the House, which has been vacated by Mr. Wilford. So far no official statement has been made as to which member will be the Government nominee, Imt it is generally anticipated that this honour will fall to Mr. Davey. The other aspirant for the position "is Sir William Steward, another Government member, who has not only filled the office in question previously, but has also been Speaker of the House. The matter of the vacancy is expected to bo mentioned in tho Jlouso this afternoon, but tho election will not bo held for a day or two, probably Friday. Even if Mr. Davey does happen to be the Government nominee, he will not have nearly the full support of the Government party. There are, however, some members on the Opposition side who intend to accord him their support. Sir William Steward's candidature will (it is understood) find favour with many of the older members of the House. He will bo nominated by tho Hon. T. Y.. Duncan, and among his supporters will bo Mr. Massey (Leader of the Opposition). It will thus be seen that the contest will bo fairly keen, if not exciting.
