SHOP-LIFTING ALLEGED,
A middle-aged woman named Catherine Mooro appeared on remand ill answer to the following three charges:—(l) That on or about .Tune 13, nt Wellington, she did steal one sealskin muff, valued at £i, the property of the D.1.C.; (2) that on or about June 21 she did steal one pair of binoculars, one leather collar bag, out , purse, nnd one handbag, of tho total value of ,£7 (is. Od., the pronerhof William Holliday; (3) that on or about Juno 18 she did steal one fur, valued at £2 10s., tho property of Charles Adams and anotiior.
Mr. T. M. Wilford, on behalf of accused, said that she wus a foreigner, apoke the English language only with difficulty, and on (he last occasion on which she was charged had intimated her intention of putting in a plea of guilty. However, since then lie had received instructions'to nppcnr on her behalf, and asked that she bo allowed to withdraw the former plea, and substitute one of not guilty.
Chief Detective Broberg stated that a fortnight ago accused had admitted tho theft, lie had had a conversation with her, and' considered that she could speak and understand Knglish quite well.
llis Worship said that ho was prepared to allow accused to withdraw the plea of guilty. Accused then elected to be tried by jury, and was remanded until Wednesday next, when the formal evidence will be taken prior to accused being committed for trial.
Bail was fixed as formerly nt XSO, and one surety of a similar amount.
