EMPIRE HOTEL.

The above is ;i photographic reproduction of the Empire Hotel, designed by Mr. -J. E. Roe, architect, Hawern, and erected under his supervision. The building stands right in t-he business centre of Hawera. It is a two-story structure of wood a.nd brick, and cost £2600. The frontage is 68ft. by 73ft. 6in. Amongst other hotels designed by Mr. Roe are those at Ivaponga, Oeo, Normanby, Manutahi. (all two-story), and Otakeho, one story. Mr. Roe also has_ had a very lengthy experience in designing dairy factories in different portions of the North Island. The work requires just that especial knowledge which Mr. Hoc possesses, and the following list of factories, designed by him aJid_ ere;rted under his supervision, arc testimony of his command of his profession:—Parkvale Cheese Factory (Carterton); additions to Parkvalo Cheese Factory (Carterton), one of the largest in New Zealand: Masterton Butter Factory; T. L. Joll's large Ivapuni Factory; Kaupokonui Dairy factory, near Kapuni; Haweni Dairy Company (five cheese factories); Normanby, Ararata,- Alton, and Manutahi Cheese Factories. In addition, Mr. Ros designed the large central curing room for the Hawera Company at the local railway station. The work, though of a nature far from simple, was well carried out, and the room is considered to be one of the best .of its kind in New Zealand. Mr. Hoe also carried out the architectural work required in connection with cheese installation at the River-dale Dairy Factory, which is stated to be the largest dairy concern under one roof in the world.' Further extensions of .this building are nowbeing made bv Mr. Roe, and. when eomlp}eted, it vrill measure 110 ft. by 130 ft. Messrs. Nolan and Tohks's ha-ndsoroe brick buildings, tenanted bv Messrs. Brunette and Son (jewellers), and others, were a-lso designed by Mr-. Roe.
