CROWN SUITS ACT. Tho Crown Suits -Act Amendment Bill, introduced by tho Government yesterday, provides that claims against the Crown will be in respect of tho following cases: — ■ (a) Breach of contract, express or implied. (b) Any cause in respect of which a petition of right will lie against his Majesty at common, law. (c) Any wrong or injury that is independent of contract- and for which an action for damages would lie if the defendant was a subject of his Majesty. It is further stipulated that no claim can be mado against tlio Crown in respect of: . ' _ (a) Assault, false imprisonment, malicious prosecution, 'or erroneous judicial process. -' ■ (b) Libel or slander. _ . (c). Any causo of action in which malicious motivo is an essential element. , ■ Tlio Governor, judges of the Supreme Court, J.P.'s, or other judicial officers are not to be deemed servants of tho Crown. . The proposed Act is not to bo construed or to create between the Crown and any other person the relation of employer or servant in any circumstances ill which that relation would not exist in the case of subjects of tho Crown. It is provided that no claim for damages shall lio against the Crown under- tho proposed Act where the Crown is liable to pay compensation under tho Workers' Compensation Act. No claim linder the proposed. Act is to bo. tried before a jury.
