PALMERSTON DAY BY DAY.
(From Our Special Correspondent.* Palmerston North, July 6. An operation for appendicitis was performed on Dr. ifartin, of Palmerston, yesterday afternoon, by Dr. Wylin, of New Plymouth. The operation was quits successful, and the patient is doing well. There was a large attendance at the weekly meeting of tho Palmerston Lite/ary and Debating Society last night, when a number of impromptu speeches wen: given. Subjects were drawn from a hat. and the members have to speak 011 tht.subject drawn. A very enjoyable evening was spent. At the next mealing in "Moci. Parliament" will bo held.
Tho Oroua Lodge of Druids (Palmerston) held a summoned meeting last evening, when there, was a very large attendance, A.D. Bro. Harriman being in tho chair. Six new members were initiated, and five others proposed. The hull-yearly balance-sheet and report were adopted. The balunct'-shect showed that the sick and funeral fund stood at .£2159 10s. 3d., management ,C 1 Os. !)d„ bonovolont JElo os. 3d., entertainment .£ll Hs. Id., and special funeral M Bs., making a total of 13s. (id, Sick pay disbursed amounted to <£113 Is. Bd. The membership roll now stands tit 427, this being a slight increase. It was decided to 01gariiso an art union, and a committee was set up for the purpose; £1 2s. was voted to a brother in distressed circumstances. At the conclusion of the business nextlodge night a card tournament will bo held, and to this event the wives of members are being invited.

The Palmcrston Brass Band met tho president and vice-presidents at tho .Municipal Chambers last night, Mr. W. Park being in the chair, when matters connected with the welfare of the baud were fully discussed, including rules for the guidance of its management. The band will give a promenade concert in the Square on Sunday afternoon. An endeavour will bo made to secure the free use of tho Opera House should tho day prove to be wet. It was mentioned that band concerts were given in tho Wellington Tnwn Hall on wet Sunday afternoons, admission being free.
The Palmcrston Football Club's third annual ball last night was a pronounced success. There was an attendance of over a hundred couples at the Muuicipal Hall, which was prettily decorated. Mr. H. Palmer was M.C., and had the assistance of an energetic committee. "Extras" were played by Mesdamcs 11. P. Muller and W. Boon, and Miss Drew.
Mr. E. E. Watson, a local breeder, was very successful with the bull-dogs which he sent to the Inverc'argill Fanciers' show. With a team of four dogs he won eight firsts,' two seconds, live specials, and the dog challenge.
Colonel Robin will give an address on "The Territorial Systen," at the meeting of the Manawatu Officers' Club on Saturday evening next.
There was a very large gathering at St. Andrew's Church last evening when the Rev. A. Doull, M.A., lat'e of Auckland, was inducted into the charge of St. Andrew's parish. Mr. Doull received a very hearty welcome. The Rev. G. Budd, of Feilding, conducted the induction service, and there were also present—Revs. M'K.enzie (Wanganui),' H. .T. Lewis (Palmcrston), J. Whyte (Levin), P. Gordon (Marton), G. Iv. Aitken (Foxton), Maclcie (Bulls), M'Cully (Tnrakina), Morton (Taranaki), and Chisholm (Mangaweka). The Rev. Mr. M'lvenzio preached the sermon, tho minister-elect and congregation being addressed by the Rev. Mr. Whyte and Rev. Mr. M'Cully respectively. Tea, followed by a public meeting, was also held. At the latter then.- were numerous speeches of welcome, and a number of musical items were rendered. During the evening presentations were made to the Rev. H. J. Lewis and G. Budd, who had conducted tile sendees at tho church, at considerable inconvenience t.i themselves, during tho four months since the Rev. Isaac Jolly went to Auckland.
At tlio quarterly meeting of the Methodist Circuit the reports read of the work in the various brandies and divisions showed a healthy state of affairs. A committee was appointed to consider establishing iu the'circuit a laymen's missionary league for promoting the work of foreign missions. This committee is to report to ne.\t meeting. A motion was carried in favour of asking the Government to pass a measure authorising a Dominion referendum to be taken on the question of Bible-read-ing in tho public schools.
