notes and comments.
IBy Glencos.) The Gisborne Eacing Club's meeting will be concluded to-day. A Press Association telegram from Christchurch states that Wimmera wa9 scratched for the Grand National Hurdles at 4 p.ni. yesterday. \mlnx is said to be a sure starter in bo'th big events at the Wellington Kacing Chili's meeting this month. ,T Hevcock, who had tlio mount on Kins Hippo in the Trial Steeplechase at Gisbonw yesterday, lias now ridden six consecutive winners over country. A Julian was in fine form at the Gisborne Eacing Club's meeting yesterday, and rode three winners, two on the flat and one over the big fences. Stourton, who ran third in the Hack Plat. Pace at Gisborne yesterday, will probably show improved form when next, bo start!* Alaster Stead, who was among the winners on the flat at Gisborne yesterday, is said to be a promising jumper. i'c Arai, w!io won the Gisborne Park Steeplechase yesterday, was successful in the same event last year. By his win yesterday he has incurred a penalty &r the Grand National- Our special correspondent wires that To Arai is, if anything, a better-conditioned horse than he was at this time last year. Tin, disqualification, impc-sed on T. O'Bvieu by the Wellington Eacing Club in July, 190S, will expire at the end of the present mouth. During the past week Le Beau and Explosive have been treated to walking exercise on the roads at Greonmeadows. An excellent illustration of how handicappers sometimes differ is provided by tiie treatment meted out to two New r /,e;\land-hml horses for the Metropolitan . Handicap and the Caulfield Cup, each race extending to a mile and a half. In the Metropolitan Handicap Artillerie is ha'idie.apped at Sot. 71b. and Broadsword at t>-d. 101b., and in the Caulfield Cup ■Yrtillcric has 7st. 131b. and Broadsword 7sl. 111b. Paisano is the first horse to incur a penalty for the Grand National Hurdles ■ since tile weights were issued. Handicapped originally at Ust. lib., he will now have to carry list. Gib. It seems ridiculous that, he should liavo to carry a penalty for yesterday's win, for. he had only two moderates opposed to him, and one of these did not finish. Had the conditions provided i'or reharidicapping instead of penalties, it is not likely that any handicapper would have increased ilie horse's weight for his \vm at Gisborne. Concerning Paisano, our correspondent telegraphs that ho won pulling up. and is undoubtedly very fit at ft®, lime.
