EXTRAVAGANCE ALLEGED. MR. ASQUITH SAYS CRITICS UNFAIR. PRESENT METHODS SOUND. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Rec. July 7, 11.5 p.m.) London, July 7. Mr. Asquilh, speaking in tho House of Commons in the Budget debate, replied to the charges made against tho Government of having incurred an excessive expenditure. Ho said tho growth of the civil expenditure was cerlainly enormous, but. it was unjust tor any section of the House to denounce it unless it was prepared to retrace tho steps made in tho direction of social reform. So also with the granting of old-age pensions. These were duo to demands made from all parts of tho House. Despite tho increased burdens of defenco and soifoal reform, Mr. Asquith claimed that the present system of fiuanco had proved itself capable of carrying the country to a safe haven.
