NEW APPOINTMENT.
EX-POLICE COMMISSIONER DIN NTS. There is good reason to believe that Mr. Dinnie, late Commissioner of Police, who is at present on leave of absence under the arrangement by which he was retired from the chargo of the police force of the Dominion, will receive an appointment in another branch of tho public service. The nature of the appointment has not transpired, but it ia understood that it is in some way connected with one of the Maori Land Boards. Under the Native Land Act of last session, it is provided that every Maori Land Board shall consist of threo members, to be appointed by the Government, and that one of those members, bein» a European, shall be appointed as president. The president shall hold office during the pleasure of the Governor, awl. shall, by virture of that appointment, be a permanent officer of the public service. The president's salary is paid out of moneys appropriated by Parliament. The Act also provides for the appointment of officers to enable the boards to carry out their duties. Probably within the next few days the exact nature of Mr. Dinnie's appointment will be mado public.
