« MAORI MISSIONS. The .Anglican Synod resumed at -1 p.m. \!v Bishop of Wellington (Br. »aliis) presiding. ■the Rev. A. M. Johnson brought down a report lroni (lie Select Committee on Maori Missions, setting forth Hint there Nde nl present no workers in 'laranaki or Hailutai'ii, but in each district the •Maoris would provide a house when a worker had been appointed. Attached to the report was a recommendation that the Bishop and ojnoa be requested to appoint a commission > mwt j|. |ovj rppi . espntativps at utafci as soon as possible to discuss matteis and report fo the Bishop, tho commission to consist of the Archdeacon of \vaitotara, the Rev. A. JJ. Johnson, Messrs. J. Jvebbell, E. H. Deans, and R. Marumnru. It was further rccomnieiuled: ill at betore the session closes, the Bishop be requested to call a meeting of church people to form a guild on the lines of St. Barnabas s Association, to be called the helivyn Guild, ' for the purpose of arousing and keeping up interest in the Maori Mission. It was resolved that the report be printed and circulated.
APPOINTMENTS. Mr. J. M. Butt was reappointed a trus- , m 0 Diocesan Pension 1' und .1 rust Board. A* -iiulcrson was re-elected to the Board of Governors of the Hadfield Memorial College and Hostel.
"A VICIOUS TRADITION." TJ'e Rev. E. AY. J. proposed that instead of fees being demanded for marriages, burials, churchings,, baptisms, and private communions, voluntary contributions should be invited. The sysof fees had broken down, and in many parishes fees were not collected at ali. flio system was a vicious tradition thev had inherited from the Church of England. It was one of the glories of the Lhureh in New Zealand that instead of being dependent upon endowments or fees it was supported by the freewill offerings of the people. At this stage tlie debate was adjourned.
PORIRUA TRUSTEES. A motion by Mr. J. Kebbell that the number of the Porirua trustees be increased to six was carried without discussion. -Mr. Kebbell stated that last year a petition signed by the three tribes from the Rangitikei River to Porirua had been presented' asking tliat a memffi-r of the Native race should.be appointed as a sixth trustee.
HOME MISSIONS. The resumed discussion on the Rev. P. W. Clarkson's proposal to appoint two mission priests to work in tlie backblocks extended to a considerable length. Archdeacon Fancourt approved (lie proposal, but thought the mission should be as nearly as possible self-supporting. .Archdeacon Harper said the mission was not required in this diocese. The Rev. P. W. Clarkeon contended I hat liis proposal, if given ell'ect to, would bring clerical ministrations within roach of many who were now in danger of relapsing into paganism. A number of amendments were carried, but the amended motion upon being put to tlie vote was rejected. The voting was as _follows:— Clergy: Ayes, 31; Noes, 12. Laity : Ayes,_'l6; Noes, 20. A majority in each order is required to carry a proposal in the Synod.
