NOTES AND COMMENTS.

CBy Gi,encoe.)

The acceptances received for tho first day's events at tho Wellington Racing Club's meeting constitute a record for a winter fixture at Trentham. Tho fields for the Wellington Steeplechase, Winter Hurdles, and Parliamentary Handicap are distinctly above the average numerically and otherwise. The most notable defections from the Parliamentary Handicap are St. Aidan, Sharpshooter, Winimera, ant! Electrakolf. Probably the first three are not coming to the meeting, and Ivlectrakoff has been accepted for in tlie Stewards' Handicap, seven furlongs. It is to be regretted that Wimmera is not among the acceptors for < the Winter Hurdles, but even without him the field is a really high-class one. A. Oliver will probably ride Pennies in tho Parliamentary Handicap at Trentham. C. Brown will ride ElectrakolT in the Stewards' Handicap, and other races at Trent ham. Brown may have the mount on Tiptoe in the Parliamentary llarnlioap. The Porirua team for the Trentham meeting will be taken across to t lie course to-morrow. Achillean, full-brother to Achilles, lias again changed hands in Australia. The price of purchase has lieen given as 200gs. California is duo to arrive at Trentham from Hastings to-day. The chestnut horse is among Hie acceptors for the Parliamentary Handicap, to be run on Saturday week. Aurifera, who used to race at the pon;v meetings at Mirainar, was taken from Melbourne to Queensland last month, and won a double four days after landing from the steamer.

The Gisborne Racing Club's meeting takes place on Thursday and Friday next. .Auckland stables will be well represented at tho meeting.

Loch Fyuo, Kremlin, Dogger Bank, and Ngapuka are expected at Trentham from Auckland this week. Ngapukn claims an engagement in the Parliamentary Handicap, and will be ridden by Mark R.van.

Audax and Wniono.have been left in both Winter Hurdles and Wellington Steeplechase at Trentham.

The Auckland horses Iloango and Nclius are likely to be taken to Sydney very shortly.

Ataahua's decisive defeat in tho Grand National Hurdles at Vleniiiigton would be a severe blow to backers, as tho horso had been a firm favourite for several weeks past. Ho had been given a great deal of solid work during the past fortnight, but many held that ho had not had enough racing to fit him for tho National.

Obi, winner of tho Grand National Hurdle Uaco at Flemington, won the hurdle race at Willianistown races oil Saturday, June 25, but prior to that he had not been an exceptionally brilliant performer over fences. Ho started favourite in the Willianistown race, but was not mentioned in the Grand National batting when the last mail left.

Captain Jingle's withdrawal from his Trentham engagements was duo to his having contracted influenza.

Mr. W. A. Jlenzies, tho V.fi.C. handicapper, has, with the consent of his committee, accented tho position of handicapper at iUr. Wren's meetings at I'itzroy, Ascot, and Richmond. He will commence his new duties in a couple of weeks. He still retains his position as V.l'.C. handicapper and handicappor for the suburban courses.

.Mr. M'Glashan, caretaker at Trentham, was in the city yesterday. He reports that the tracks are in really good condition, as the rain has not been so severely felt at Trentham as in tho city,

In this issue the thoroughbred stallion Rangipapa is advertised for sale, lie is by Papakiira from Elusion, and was an exceptionally brilliant performer on the. turf once he struck form. His record was-, 41 starts, 9 wins, 10 seconds, and !) thirds, and his victories were in many cases achieved with heavy imposts.

N. Campbell, who was injured while riding Diplomatic in a steeplechase at Hastings last month, will not bo able to resume riding until the Grand National meeting. Ho had sustained a double fracture of the collarbone, and also had two ribs broken. J. O'Coiincll, who was also injured at the Hastings meeting, will probably be in tho saddle again at Trentham. C. Cress, another injured jockey, is spending a holiday in Auckland.

FIXTURES. July 7 and B.—Gisborne B.C. Winter. July 10, 20, and 23.—'Wellington 11, C. Winter. August 9, 11, and 13.—C.J.C. Grand National.
