The private secretary of his Excellency Lord Islington lias telegraphed to the Mayor of Auckland (Mr. L. J. Bagnall) that Lord Islington intends to pay an official visit to Auckland on July 12.—Press Association.

At tho invitation of the management of the King's Theatre, his Excellency tho Govomor was present yesterday at a private exhibition of various pictures showing tho different incidents connected with the late King's funeral.

Our Masterton coxrespomdent states that the news of tho death of Mr. Adam Armstrong, Mayor of, Carterton, was received at Masterton'.yesterday. Deceased was the owner of a well-known estate beyond Masterton, and was well known to all old identities. .

Our Masterton correspondent states that H. H. Boddington of - that town has been elected secretary of the newly-formed ex-South African Campaigners' Association.

Mr. A. P. Feildihg, who has acted as custodian to the Masterton branch of the Y.M.C.A. for a number of years, has tendered his resignation.

Mr. Henry Hawkins, chief warder at the Auckland Gaol, died on Wednesday morning after a brief illness, at the age of 51 years. Mr. Hawkins joined tho Armed- Constabulary in 1880, and went through the Parihaka and West Coast troubles with the Natives. Later lie was transferred to tho Permanent Artillery.' He joinel the Prisons. Department at' Dunedin in 188 S. Owing to liis excellent service and ability, his promotion was steady, and about two years ago lie was appointed to the position of. chief warder at the Auckland Gaol. Mr. Hawkins was a man whose estimable personal qualities made him a general favourite. He was a Freemason of long, standing. He leaves a wife and two grown-up children.

The Rev. C. W. J. Maclaverty, formerly curate of St. Peter's, Wellington, who is returning'■ from England, will succeed the Rev. B. Bond as vicar of Mavtinborough. Mr. Boi\d has been, appointed vicar of St. Thomas's, Newtown.

Mr. L. T. ' Reichcl, patentee. _of Reichel's fire alarm, leaves for America, via' Tahiti,, by the Mokoia on Thursday next. He will be accompanied by Mrs. Reichel.

A well-known figure in the Waira-, rapa, Mr. Adam Armstrong, died in Wellington yesterday at the age of 64 years. The deceased, who was Mayor of Carterton, had been in poor health for some time past, and a few days ago was operated on in this city. He was born in the North of Ireland, and settled in t.lie Wairarapa . nearly 40 years ago. He was well-known throughout the district through his long connection with lo'cal bodies.. Mr. Armstrong leaves a widow, four sons, and ,fivo daughters (one of the latter being the wife of Mr. Robert Darroch, headmaster of the Roseneath School). The interment takes place at Carterton. .
