A THEATRE IN WILLIS STREET.
APPLICATION TO CITY COUNCIL. An application for a permit for tne erection of a theatre in Willis Street was before the City Council last evening. The By-laws Committee recommended that the permit bo granted, provided Uiat the city engineer's requirements as to exits were complied with. After some discussion, the matter was referred back to the committee. It was decided, or. the committee's recommendation, tinst _ the provision in the city by-lairs requiring aide courts to public buildings be not insisted upon in the case of the proposed skating rink at Aitken Street, as the owners wero providing nine exit doors along the street frontage. The sito of the proposed new theatre in Willis Street is a block of vacant land, 50ft. by 100 ft., situated at tho rear of Hume's Buildings, access to which is gained at present by a right-of-way from Boulcott Street. The land was reeently purchased by Mr. Thos. Coverdale, of Christchurch, and is perhaps the only unoccupied section of such dimensions in tho heart of' the city. The proposal, it is understood, is to ' make an entrance to tho proposed theatro by sacrificing one of the shops in Hume's Buildings fronting on to Willis Street.
