THE FREE LIST ON THE TRAMS.
FOB ERRAKDS OF MERCY. One of the recommendations of the Tramways Committee of the City Council, discussed at last night's meeting, was as follows"That a tramway pass be granted to the lady visitor of the "Wellington Young Women's Christian Association."
Councillor TTevor opposed tho 'recommendation, remarking that it was hard to say where tho granting of free passes would end. Soon overy Tom, Dick, and Harry would be riding free on the cars, he said. He understood that all of tho council's employees travelled free upon the cars.
The Mayor said that Mrs. Neil Mac Lean, president of the association, had given him the assurance that the lady visitor, Mrs. Belworthy, was engaged solely upon visiting the sick and relieving distress. On these representations the committee had unanimously agreed to grant tho pass. There were only a few ladies riding free on. the cars, including the Benevolent Institution ■ official, Mother iMary Aubert, and two or three nurses. R The pass l/fca granted, and Councillor Trevor was the only dissentient votei when tho opinion of the council was taken.
