THE CARRENO RECITALS.
The third of the series of Carreuo recitals was given in the Opera House last evening. Tho programme opened with the Waldstcin Sonata of Beethoven, set for the Academy competition this year. In this beautiful work the wonderful technique and power of interpretation of the player were well exhibited, and the conclusion of each of the three movements was greeted with enthusiastic applause. A beautiful selection of Chopin numbers followed, the melodious Nocturne (Opus 48), tho brilliant "Etude, A Flat," the characteristic "Ballade, G Minor," a.nd the liright and sparkling "Tarantelle." The varying moods of all these were charmingly interpreted by tho pianist. In response to an oneore, Carreno gave tho dainty "Butterfly" study, which had delighted previous audiences, and repealed it in response to an enthusiastic re-demand. After a shoTt interval Weber's "Concortstueck" was played, with Herr Beimo Scherek at the second piano. This piece begins with a rather slow movement, works up to a passionate pitch, and breaks into a fine march before tho climax. It had tho effect of showing wot only what a wonderful performer is Carreno, but what a high-class pianist, is Hcrr Scherek, who was able worthily to sustain his part in such a combination. For an encore number Madamo Carreno played MacDovell's "Hexentanz." which was also given by her Hie previous night. Two selections from Rubinstein followed, the well-known "Melodic" and tho Barcarolle, F. Minor. These weiv followed by the SchubertTausig "Marche Militairo." the brilliant performance of which gave ri-e to an encore, to which the pianist responded with the charming waltz of her own composition, "Teresita." The following is the programme for tonight's concert:—Sonnta in B minor, Op. 58 (Chopin); Hondo Op. 52, No. 2 (Beethoven); Vogel als Prophet (Schumann), Erl Konig (Schubert-Liszt); Concerto in B flat minor (Tschaikowslcy); orchestral accompaniment on second piano, Benno Scherek; Romanza, E flat, Barcarolle, G major, and "Fausse Note" Etude (Rubinstein). There will be no concert to-mor-row night, and Saturday will be the last opportunity of hearing the gifted pianist, who is to leave for Aucklaud on Monday next.
