$ IB? Teleirapli.—Special CorrcsDondenU Wanganui, June 28. The installation of the metallic telephone circuit here lias now been completed, thus bringing the local telephone exchange into line with the up-to-date installations of large centres. The Powclka Petitior; Committee report that 2GOO signatures are already to hand, with many lists still out. Another week's canvass will he made before closing the lists. Wanganui, June 29. Steps are being taken to have the name of Aramoho railway station changed to Wanganui North. During the Mayor's absence, at the Municipal Conference in Wellington, Councillor Liffiton will act as deputy Mayor. The Municipal Association notified that, owing to its increase in population, Wanganui was entitled to two representatives at the conference, but the council has decided not to appoint a second representative this year. The borough engineer recommends raising the wall of the Okehu 'reservoir another two feet. Such u work, though costing only Jil4, will, give additional capacity of two million gallons. The Borough Council has considered its works programme for the coining year, including riverbank protection, increased accommodation at the municipal baths,' separate baths for men and women, construction of a storitj}* reservoir and settling tanks in connection with tlio water supply, a large amount of street formation, and drainage, water, and gas main extension. Part of this would bo necessary in any case, but the recent amalgamation with Arnnioho, St. John's, nnd Durietown have naturally swelled the programme. During the past two or thrco years a great deal of borough works have been done out of revenue, but this has had the effect of somewhat swelling the council's overdraft, and it is now proposed to raise loans amounting to a total of .£25,000 for the works mentioned. In addition to these loans a special rate of 2d. has been struck for tho payment of interest on existing loans, and tho general rate has been raised Id., this cdurso being considered wiser than swelling the overdraft by undertaking permanent works out of revenue. The local tramway employee.? have formed an industrial union, and have registered under the .Arbitration Act.
