PLANS AND THE SUE. There has been a satisfactory secure! to the recent meeting of residents at Otira, ivb.cn it was decided to urge upon the Government the necessity of a coth»o hospital, together with the services of°a doctor and nurse, at Otira, dura? the construction of the Arthurs Pass tunnel. , ~ ~ Kepresentntion b? Mr. Scddon, M.P., has elicited a reply from the Minister of Public Works as under:— "1 have to state that plans and specifications for t. suitable building will be prepared bv the Public Works Department and "forwarded to the Greyniouth Hospital Board when ready, on the understanding that the board will provide the funds required for its erection. In addition, if any suitable land owned by tli* Government is available, au effort will be made to provide a site for the hospital, such site to be leased to the board for, say, five years, at a nominal rental." In the same connection Mr. fceddon has received a letter from the Hon. Geo. l'owlds,. Minister for Hospitals and Charitable Aid, stating that if it is decided to erect the hospital, and it is approved bv the Department, donations towards the'liospitnl. if p:<id to the "Westland Hospital Board, will be entitled to a Government subsidy of 245. in the .£. The Minister suggested that it would be well to ascertain the actual amount, that could be guaranteed, towards the first cost of erection, tl.o doctor's salary, and the sources from which such could be obtained. When these particulars were received, the Department would be in a better position to offer advice with regard to plans.
