NEW GOVERNMENT BUILDINGS.

FOR CHRISTCHURCH.

"It has been observed thnt Gothic forms have bad a greater vogue in the street architecture of Christchurch than in that of any other city in New Zealand. Canterbury College, the Law Courts, the old Government Buildings, and Provincial Hall, the Museum, and the School of Art are notable examples, and the local tradition is carried on in the "Press" newspaper offices, which were completed a couple of years ago. Tho now Government buildings, however, which are to be. erected at the corner of Worcester Street, on the west side of Cathedral Square, will be on renaissance lines, which are generally found more adaptable to modern methods and business needs. The principal ornamental feature of the long frontage on Worcester Street will bo Corinthian columns on the upper portion of the central bay. The materials of both the street elevations will bo mainly red brick and Oamaru stone, but the plinth will be of Dobson's sandstone, from Greymouth. The specifications show that regard has been bad for New Zealand industries. The timber is to be totara, kauri, rimu, and matai, with Baltic pino for special purposes, Oregon for tho flagstaff. .All the Portland cement must be produced in New Zealand. Tho building, which comprises a base-' ment and three stories, is to accommodate \ the Christchurch establishments of the Customs Department, State Pire Insurance Office, State Coal Department, Conciliation Commissioner. Valuation Department, Stamp and Death Duties Office, Public Works Department, Labour Department, and Official Assi"nee, and there will also be rooms for visiting Cabinet Ministers. The building is to be finished within 20 months of the signing of the contract. Mr. J. C. Maddeson, F.R.1.8.A., of Christchurch, is. tho architect.
