SOUTH ISLAND TRUNK RAILWAY.
A LARGE VOTE WANTED. FORMATION OF A LEAGUE. IBy TelcEraDh-Press Association.! Christchurch, June 29. A conference convened by the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce of delegates representing public and other bodies interested in the completion of the South Island Main Trunk Railway was held at the Chamber of Commerce this afternoon. Mr. H. J. Marrinor, vice-president of ■ the chamber, presided, and there was a largo attendance of members of the chamber and of delegates from Marlborough and other districts. Dr. Redman (Picton) moved: "That this meeting, representing the different bodies interested in the completion of the South Island Main Trunk Railway, move that a large aud representative deputation wait upon tho Government urging them to complete speedily tho South Island Main Trunk Railway, and place a large nam on the Estimates for that purpose." The Mayor of ChristchuTch seconded the motion. The Hon. H. F. Wigram, Mr. T. Sullivan (Cheviot), Mr. James Boyd (Kaikoura), and Mr. T. Gee (Cheviot) also spoke in support o* the motion, which was agreed to. On the motion of Mr. J. Davidson (Kaikoura), seconded by Mr. J. S. Gibson (Cheviot), it was agreed: "That the bodies represented by this meeting form themselves into a league for urging tho completion of the South Island Main Trunk Railway, and that branches-be formed in every district for the propagation of the league's business, the league to be called ' The South Island Main Trunk Railway League.*" The menthols-of the deputation aro' to be appointed by various branches, and the date of tho interview is to be communicated by Mr. Marriner, who was elected first president of the league.
