BIG RUSH SETS IN.

EXCITEMENT AT FEVER HEAT.

THE NEW GOLDFIELD. CLAIMS STAKED EVERYWHEREBy Telegraph—Press A?soclation—Copyright. (Rec. June 2!), 0.15 p.m.) . Victoria (8.C.), June 8. A big rush of prospectors has set in to Northern British Columbia, following the sensational discovery of gold in the neighbourhood of Stewart City. At this point on the Portland Canal a small city has sprung up within the last four znonths, as the result of the opening up of a number cf very rich quartz properties. The prices of town lots there now run into excessive figures. The present find, which has raised publie excitement to fever heat, is said to consist of a mammoth gold reef of free milling ore. The discovery was made by Messrs. C. 31. Dolgrovc and Louis Anderson on one of the forks of Bitter Creek, about 13 miles up the valley from Stewart. The ledge was first reported to be 3000 feet wide, but moro conservative estimates placo its width at 50 feet. The assays run to nearly 50 dollars (about .£10) a ton. A stampede of tho whole population followed the publication of the news, but the mountain side at tho sceno of tho find is very precipitous, and few of the gold-soekers reached tho ground. The whole vicinity has now been staked out in claims, and mill tests will follow. The whole of the Northern Coast of British Columbia is experiencing great mining activity. The great improvements in transportation following the building of Prince Rupert, situated 100 miles from Stewart, have formed a big incentive to prospectors.

NO OFFICIAL PARTICULARS. GOLD COMMISSION SILENT. London, Juno 28. The Agents-General in London asked Hie Government of British Columbia for information regarding the gold discovery near Stewart (8.C.). A reply has been received, stating that the Government has so far received no particulars from tho Gold Commissioner at Stewart.
