PALMERSTON NEWS.
(By TcJejjr&pli.-—-Special Correspondent.) Palmerston North, June .27. The many friends of Major Dunk will bo pleased to learn that he is making fair progress towards recovery from a severe illness. Major Dunk is chairman of the National Dairy Show Committee, and tho time, energy, aud ability which ho brings to ljeur on luakinjr tho nrraugoments for this great exhibition is of.great value to tho Munawatu A. and P. Association, and needless to say is appreciated by his fellow committecmen. It must have been very disappointing to him to have been laid low on' the ovo of the most successful show which the association has achieved. Mr. S. 11. Lancaster, last year's president of the association, was appointed chairman of the committee, whilst Major Dunk was laid aside. Mr. W. T. Wood, of Palmerston, who has been on a health-recruiting visit to Eotorua, has fully recovered, and will return here shortly. Nearly the whole of the visitors to the National Dairy Show have got" away to their homes, and the town appears rather quiet after the great influx of people. There are still a number of mc- . chanics at work in the exhibition hall dismantling tho various machinery exhibits. In connection with the proposal of the Borough Council to use cinde petroleum on the streets, with a view of abating the dust nuisance in fine weather, the borough engineer, Mr. S. Jickell, took tho opportunity during show week to con-. suit a' , number of Taranaki visitors on the subject. The goneral opinion expressed was. that unless the oil were incorporated with the road material it would be of little uso for this purpose. .This, of course, would be too costly, a process, and there is little likelihood of the council proceeding with the experiment. Mr. J. Buick, of Jackytown, met with an accident in the hunting field a few days ago. His horse came down .at a jump and rolled over the rider, who had his collarbone broken, shoulder dislocated, and arm badly hurt, besides other minor injuries. The Palmerston Liedertafel givo their fifth concert on Jidy 7. The liedertafel ■ has become quite a strong organisation, and under the capable baton of Mr. F. W. A. Mason has made great strides of late. The.special services held by the Salvation Army on Sunday (the collection being in aid of the band fund) were largely attended. A rather distressing accident happened to Mrs. Fraser, sen., of Komako, yesterday. She was driving in a gig between Komako and Ashhurst; down a steep cutting in tho Totara Reserve, when tlit. vehicle was capsized, and she was thrown out with such force as to break her ankle. Mrs. Frank Arton, who was with Mrs. Fraser, was also thrown out, but did not sustain any serious injury. : ; — I
