HOLIDAY DISASTER.
CROWDED STEAMER BURNT. MOTHERS THROW CHILDREN OVERBOARD. FIVE HUNDRED SAVED. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. (Reo. June 27, 11.5 p.m.) New York, June 27. A sensational disaster is reported from the Mississippi River. A river steamer, crowded with excursionists, took fire and was burned to' the water's edge. ■ Putting the, engines at full speed ahead the captain beached tho vessel, and saved tho lives of five hundred passengers. Although flames were breaking through the lower works of tho vessel and great excitement prevailed, the crew succeeded in restraining the crowd, nnd permitting an orderly disembarkation. Four persons were killed, and dozens of others received burns. The passengers state that sonio frenzied women threw their children overboard from the burning ship and jumped into the'river after them.' Their fate is unknown.
