HUTT BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The usual.meeting of the Hutt Borough Council was held last evening, when there vere present the Mayor (Mr. L. l • > . Sunny), and Councillors Baldwin, Maciskill, Kempthorne, Hawthorn, and Anon. Miss Pre wrote stating that she "was jrepared to accept <£100 as compensation or damage to her property during the construction of the western approach to ho new Hutt Bridge. The request was granted. . Mr. V. Cavanah drew attention to Hie state of tho Wnijini-o-mata Hill Head. It was decided to serve a notice of repair, under the Fencing Act, on the jwner of the property, whose boundary fence • was concerned. , ___ v Mr. C. W. Brown asked that.42on.be placed on the estimates for the widening tho road in front of his properly, it • os resolved to inform Mr. Brown that ao funds were available. Mi. A. Gad&by, at ih© request of a number of butchers of the Lower Hutt, offered a site at Taita for an abattoir. The council did not accept the onerMr. C. P. Skerrett (Borough. Solicitor — svrole stating that he was of opinion that the council had no authority to oner to Live Government certain land (pjn chased originally for a gasworks 51 te) i o '* "lo" school purposes at Lower Hutt. It wa& decided to forward this opinion on to Mr. Wilson, the chairman of the Hutt .District High School Committee, and on the motion of Mr. Bunny it was decided also to ask tho Minister for Education if, 111 the event of a high school being erected within, the nest three years, he wou d consider the gas site as a favourable site for the school. , The Bruce County Council wrote seeking tbe co-operation of the Hutt n ~ cil in approaching the Government with a view to having legislation passed to facilitate the collection of rates and minimising the loss caused under existing circumstances by making it colnpulsory upon owners, etc., to give notice to the local authorities of every change of j occupancy or ownership of rateable jno- 1 perty within the district. It was decided to support the proposal. Councillor Baldwin, on behalf ,of the Fire Brigade, requested that certain alterations b® made to the fire-bell tower so as to allow the hoses to dry. The engineer was instructed to carry out the work. , ' . It was resolved to inform prosnectivo tenderers lor the lighting of the bridge by electricity that the council were not prepared to receive tenders at present. The' engineer reported good progress with work at Everest Creek. Forty anda half chains of-the culvert going west from the river had been completed, The _ expenditure to date was JJ1345 ss. 7d., and the estimated cost J82600. Seven connections had been made with the water mains, making a total of 556 to date, and three new gas services had been made since last report. The section of drainage along Bellevue Road had been blocked owing to tho rainy weather, and this section'of the work had been suspended until the contractor for -&o. 1 section had passed Bellvue Road. Work had been commenced in Wainui Avenue, and Hvas progressing satisfactorily. The roads and .footpaths along the AYiUoughby Knight Estate, were being attended to, and" the cutting of the drain froiii the estate to Middlemarch. "had been completed. The' streets and footpaths in. Alicetown were being cleaned and repaired. and the side streets at the northern end of the borough wore xecemng attention. ' The cleaning of the creeks had been completed. .The expenditure for tho fortnight ending June 15 w 14s. 2(1., minus JES3 12s. 4(1. refnnd on ,£IO,OOO loan.
