Considerable time was' given to the proposals embodied in the Govenior-Ocuoral's .Speech for tho opening of Parliament on Friday next. Air. Fisher, Prime Minister, is relicent, but he has .stated 1 hat tho Government intends to carry out the proposal to make n payment of 235. per head of population to the Slates for a period of ten years, with a special extra grant of C2-j(J,(JOO per annum to Western Australia. It is not intended to touch the tariff this session. It is proposed to take a referendum on tho question of extending the operations of the industrial laws. OLD ACE PENSIONS INCREASE. LABOUR MODIFIES ITS PLANS. Melbourne, June 25. Mr. Fisher, the Federal Prime. Minister, has announced that the proposed amendments in regard co old age pensions will not be so extensive-' as previously foreshadowed. Tho former proposals would mean an extra cost of £1,090,000 annually to the Commonwealth. Tho Government is to have tlio power to reduce the women's pension age from sixty-five to sixty, and proclaim invalid pensions, tlio provisions entailing together an extra cost of about £700,000 ,i year. V The Ministry did not, said Mr. Fisher, intend to go beyond that at present.
