KAISER COMES SECOND
AMERICAN AYJNS KIEL YACHT RACE. By Telegraph—Press Association-Oopyright. Berlin, June 24. The American yacht Westward, owned by Mr. Cochrane, won the chief event at the Kiel yacht races. Tbe Gorman Emperor's" yacht, Meteor, with tho Emperor William on board, was second. SOMETHING ABOUT THE WESTWARD. A NEW HERRESHOIT SCHOONEE. The yachting correspondent of tho London "Times," writing recently on the prospects of the season in international yachting, said:— "The A cliiss for schooners, yawls, and ketches exceeding 21! metres, which ulready numbers in its rinks such fine vessels as Meteor IV, Germania, Cicely, and Susanne, will have a welcome rocruit this year in the New American schooner Westward. This vessel has been constructed under tho International liulcs from the ritslgn of Herresholf, and, as sho is tho first yacht that tho famous Khode bland draughtsman has produced under our measurement formula, her appoaranco in British waters will eicite much intereat. Westward, which is rather larger than Cicely, but smaller than the German schooners Meteor IV aiiti Germania, is expected to sail her .maiden race in tho Noro to Deal match, 'utter which sho will. g 0 to Kcil, returning to England for the International Eegatta in" the Solent. She is to bo commanded by Captain Charles Barr, of America Cup fame., who 13 no granger to our regatta courses, having sailed the schooner Ingomar in English waters with brilliant success a few years a^o. "The A class will bo truly international in character this year, as Germany will be represented by Meteor IV and Germania; America by Westward; Franco by Susanne; and ftnglaml by Cicely. Prom a spectacular point of view tho racing of this class will bo the most ntlraclico feature of tho season, for nothing moro graceful and picturesque than a modern schooner sails the seas. It is seldom that an American yacht of important tonnage crosses tho Atlantic to try conclusions with our owu vessels under class racing conditions, and it is particularly' unfortunatt that wo should have nothing morn modern to meet her than the ciglit-ycav-old Cicely. Tho latter, however, is a very speedy craft in averago weather, and may bo relied upon to give the new Hcrreshoff vessel a good race. The Gorman schooners aro fine, able vessels, that aro seen at their best in heavy weather. Of the pair, Ocrmania is perhaps a triflo the faster, and her wonderful performance in l!)0S. when she lowered tho "record" for tho Old Queen's Course by over a quarter of an hour, is «till fresh in the memories of those who had the good fortune to witness it. The Fife-designed Pusannc, which has recently bron sold to Franco, is a splendid little ship in any variety of weather, ant), with the aid of a long time allowance, a most difficult opponent to defeat."
