ONE OF OUR SLOWER TRAINS.

FASTER PACE DESIRED. It is to be suggested to tho Railway Department that tho present railway time-table might bo somewhat improved if tho 5.20 a.m. Cross Creek passenger and goods train were speeded up so that connection could be made with the Now Plymouth mail train, which leaves l'almcrston at 11.42 a.m. At the present time, the Cross Creek train under notice runs its 78 miles to Wocdvillo in six hours, including stoppages, an averajp of 13 miles an hour. It is contended that of the stoppages fully an hour is thrown away through unnecessary waits at Ekctahuna, Pahiatua, and Woodvillc. Tho WollingtonWoodvillo mail train docs the 7S miles in four hours nine minutes, an average of over 18 miles an hour. Tho Wai-pukurau-Woodville train has a wait of SO minutes before it connects with the 11.A5 Woodville-Palmorston train, and if this train wore speeded up ten or fifteen minutes, and the Cross CreokWootlvillo early morning train run cut down to five hours, AVairarapa passengers and others as far north as Waipukurau could connect easily with tho New Plymouth mail at Palmcrston North. The proposed alteration would also be of great service to those Hawko's Bay and AVairarapa farmers and stockdealers who like plenty of time to attend tho Palmerston North stool; sales. As the matter stands now Wai-' rarapa and Hush District, passengers cannot reach Wangnnui before 9 o'clock at nifjit. It is understood that tho various local bodies interested have taken tho subject up with tho idea of persuading the Railway Department to make the necessary alterations.
