THE TURF.

I 4 ' NOTES AMD COMMENTS. ' JBy Glencob.J This week Micro is no race meeting ■ of any importance in the Dominion. ■ The Gisborne Racing Club's meeting : takes place on July 7 and i>. A southern writer says that the riding was very poor at the Ashburton meeting last week, and considers that several races might have resulted differently if the jockeys on the second horses'had known their business properly. Lionheart, who figures among the entries for the hurdle race at Trentham, is said to be galloping freely on tlie tracks at Foxton. Mr. J. E. Henrys, who wont smith to the Ashburton mooting last, week, returned to Wellington yesterday. Birlicnhead was represented by two winners at the Ashburton meeting on Thursday, niioji St. Aidali and Hock Ferry wore successful. St. Aidan has been running well lately, but until Thursday Rock Ferry has never shown much form on a South Island course. Tiptoe is galloping well at Hawera, and his owner has decided upon a- trip to Treutham with him. Douche is not improving in lier jumping, and will require a gocd deal of schooling before she will win a hurdle race. Feu de Joie out-jumped her field in the Poraile Hurdles' at Napier, and the victory of the Torpedo mare was largely due to this. Jockeys 0. Jenkins and 11. Telford proceed to Porirua to-day, and will assist J. K. Pressor in the preparation of his yearlings. Nero was very lame after winning Mm Napier Steeplechase, and ho may not be able to race for some tim<.. Lingerer is entered for two steeplechases at Gisborne, and it may be that his new owner will soon receive a return of his purchase money. If Teolano could have been depended upon not to bleod, tho Neivstead Handicap at Greemneadows last week would have looked a certainty for him, but even his connections could not trust him, and lie started at an outsid price. For once in a way tho Daunt gelding did not burst a blood vessel, and, leading the whole way, he won easiiy. Probably had there been anything in tho race capable of making - him gallop, the bleeding would have taken place, but the extra exertion which causes this was not necessary in the race in question. Miss Doric, who won the June Handicap at the Ashburton meeting on Friday, had previously shown fair form in hack races, but had never been seen in open company. Under the circumstances, her victory was full of merit, as she had a good lot of handicap performers behind hoi. At Southland race meetings during the present season, progeny of Stepniak have won £1740 in stakes. Paisano is generally held to be one of tho best-treated horses in the Winter Hurdles at Trentham Fandango, who won the Longbeach Hurdle Handicap at Ashburton, is a full-brother to the New Zealand Cup winner, Grand Rapids, by Gipsy Grand —Whirlpool. When doing his preliminary he blundered so badly at the-hurdle in' front of the stand that his chance of getting round the course looked remote. Jiis opportunity came, however, when three horses came to grief at the last hurdle. The victory was well received. Satisfactory fields contested all the hurdle races' at tho Ashburton County Racing Club's meeting, and the, club's action in placing two jumping events on each day's programme was quite justified. FIXTURES. Jnly 7 and B.—Gisborne B.C. Winter. July 10, 20, aud «3.—Wellington B.C. Winter. August .9, 11, and 13.-C.J.C. Grand National.
