AUSTRALIAN CONDITIONS UNSATISFACTORY, By,TeleiraDh—Press Association—CooyTlshl Brisbane, Juno 24. The Sugar-growers' Conference at Cairns resolved that steps should be taken to have necessary legislation - passed forthwith by the Federal and . State Parliaments to prohibit abso-. lutely the production of sugar-cane by coloured labour; also to place a countervailing duty on the sugar produced by coloured labour in other countries. The conference asked for the appointment of a Royal Commission to inquire regarding tho sugar industry. Tlio State Government does not intend to make any' further advances towards the encouragement of sugar production until the Federal Parliament has declared its attitude as to the future of the industry. [The growers declare that out of the ;£2l a ton realised for sugar on the mar- . ket the growor only got ,£4 4s. Gd. The manufacturer of the raw sugar made a clear profit of .£3 Is. lOd. per ton, while V the refiners cleared £7 per ton.l
