Jlor principal <s~ti,:%k Leni; ' h ' 376 ft: brca/th ' COUNTY OF INVEIINESS, FROM LIVERPOOL. { SMART PASSAGE. One of the smartest sailing passages between England aud New Zealand that has been accomplished for some time was compie ted yesterday, when the barque County ot Jnvernes-s, from Liverpool, dropped anchor in tho stream soon after 7 u m the voyage having occupied 99 dav K . This is exceptionally good travelling when we compare il with the last half-dozen sailers that have arrived in the Dominion from foreign ports, notably the French barnuo Maria, 134 days from Liverpool to Lyttelton, and tho Marjory Glen, 157 days from London to Wellington. Tho voyage of tho County of Inverness was uneventful. Departure was taken from Liverpool on March 15, and tho tug was east off at luskar, on the south coast of Ireland, rair weather and favourable winds marked the first portion of the passage, but in the region of tho Kquator she was becalmed for sis days. She orossed tho lino when 3D days out, and rounded the Cape of Good Hope 28 days later. Brisk westerlv winds favoured the vessel from isat stage, and excellent running was nmde'till Cape Lceuwin was sighted. Thence onwards the weather changed, and the was continually ploughing through high seas. Last week, while crossing the Tasmnn Sea, sho encountered tho full for<c of the south-west gale that prevailed, but came through without mishap. Farewell Spit was passed on Tuesday night, and tho barque was oil t.ho Heads on Wednesday evening, tho master deciding to sail In 1 next, morning without tho aid of a pilot. The County of Inverness is an iron barque, owned by the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company. She brings a general cargo for Weiliugton and Dunedin. and will berth this morning to disohargo the local portion. Captain J. A. Evntu is in command, and has with him Mr. J. Wilson, mate, mid Mr. E. J. Prestridge, second mate. Captain Evans is well known in 1 New Zealand, having formerly been mas- I ter of the Taraitaki, and more recently of the ilinemoa and the Gladys, A notice in this week's Gazette states that tiie Greymouth Harbour Hoard have notified that the Morw system of night signalling ha« been installed at tho signal station at Greymouth, on the South Breakwater, and vessels may now com--1 municato with the shore at night-time. 1 The Wootton is expected from the south this morning, and will be dispatched for 1 Wanganui at 3 p.m.
MAMARI'S OUTWARD CARGO. Whon the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Company's cargo steamer Mamari left hero for London yesterday morning, sho had on board cargo, shipped at New Zealand ports, of which tho following is a summary. From Lyttelton: 88,654 carcasses mutton and lamb, SCO casks of tallow and pelts, 562 sacks of grass seed, and 100 bales of wool. From Dmiedin: 88 quarters beef, 19,623 carcasses mutton, 219 bales rabbit«kins, 1 bale leather. 104 bales wool, 379 sacks marl, 16 Backs hides, 500 sacks gra&s seed, 22 casks pelts, 70 casks tallow, 10 casks casings. 127 bags scheelUe, 2 packages sundries. From Wellington: 4014 quarters beef, 13 pieces beef, 3873 carcasses mutton and lamb, 17 haunches mutton, 82 bags shoulders mutton, 28 bags kidneys, 157 bales tow, 545 bales hemp, 149 bales wool, 194 casks tallow*, 388 sacks copra, 9 packages sundries. When tho Waimato was leaving Lyttelton for Waitara, on Tuesday night, she slowed down at the Ileads, evidently on account of somo break idown, but tho troublo could not havc # been serious, as sho resumed her voyage in fivo or ten minutes. The Waimato is due at \\ elliugton from Waitara on Tuesday nest. On Sunday the New Zealand Shipping Company's Ituahino is due here from Lyttelton, to complete Homeward loading. She leaves here for London on Thursday next. At daylight on Monday morning the Government steamer Hinemoa i 6 to leave on a visit to tho Cook Strait lighthouses. She avrlycd back yesterday morning from her periodical cruise of tho northern lighthouses and harbours. The local a-gonts of the Karamea Steamship Company, Ltd., notify by advertisement, in this issue, that the s.s._Maugapapa Trill sail for West-port and Karamea to-morrow, at 5 p.m. a A notice to consignees of cargo, ex County of Inverness, from Liverpool, ap- ! pears elsewhere in this issue. Mr. H. W. D. Bold has joined tho Arar hura as chief officer, in place of Mr. J. Baldwin. Captain Clark, of tho Holindale, will bo in command of the Lauderdale, during the time that Captain 1\ lfolm is 011 holiday : leave. .Captain Robertson, mate of the lloltndale, takes command of that vessel, and Mr. Anderson joins as mate. Mr. Wocdnutt joins tho Lauderdale as second mate. Mr. Young, who has been acting-chief engineer of the Lauderdale, is to transfer to the Holmdale a-s chief ongineer in place of Mr. White, who has accepted a shore position in Sydney. Mr. Jackson rejoins the Lauderdale at Greymouth as chief engineer, after holiday leave. Messrs. W. M. Bannatyne and Co. advise that the Kairaki is due from Kaiapoi nest j Wednesday, and will be dispatched the same day for Napier and Gisborne. Tho dredge Paritutu will be placed on the Patent Slip for cleaning and painting early next week. Repairs t-o the barqucntine Speculant will, it is hoped, bo completed in time to permit of her sailing for Gisborne on Tuesday next. The Holmdale is to lcavo to-day for Greymouth, thence Lyttelton. An exported arrival this evening is the Poherua. Sho is bringing a cargo of coal j from Greymouth. 1
