THE lIAWKE'S BAY TEAM. Tho challenging team from Hawke's Bay arrived by last evening's mail train, and wore formally welcomed by the chairman of the local association (Mr. W. Organ), and also by the selector, Mr. H. V. Walton, and a number of local hockey enthusiasts. The team are quartered at tho New Occidental Hotel until Monday morning, with tho* exception that tonight they will stay at Day's Bay House. Mr. G. 11. King, manager of the Hawke's Bay team, ami Mr. Ilallett, secretary of tho Hawke's Bay Association, accompanied the men. They are, of course, confident that their eleven will give a good account, of themselves, and state that tho local team will l>o given a "hard go" to retain the shield. * Tho visiting team have been invited to the dance given in honour of the Wajrarapa ladies' and Hawke's Bay team s visit. Somo interesting information was also given regarding hockey matters in Hawke's Bay. The recent lournamenr at Hastings on June H resulted in a record gato of 2000 spectators. The Hawke's Bav team includes three men from Dannevirko. one from Waipawa, six from Hustings, and two from Napier. In regard to referees no member is finally i passed as a capable referee until h? has answered a list of -Ifl questions, and must gain 97 per cent, of marks. Tho Ilawko's Bay Association have forwarded a minute to tho New Zealand Association ottering a guarantee of .£75 towards the cost of piloting an Australian eleven through New Zealand, should it bo ultimately decided lo arrange matters in this direction. Threo of (he llawke's Bay eleven are staled to be exceptionally fasi men, namely, Shaltky, Atkinson, and Hallelt. A team from the Palmerston Old Girls Club proceeded lo Ohakea on Wednesday afternoon, and played tho local team. The country players proved victorious by two goals to nil, and rather surprised tho Old Girls by tho excellence of their combination.
