4 FOOTBALL. HEW ZEALAND RUGBY UNION. HUTT ASSAULT CASE REVIVED. THE PENALTY INCREASED. A meeting of the Management Committee of tho Nciv /A'liiaiiU Jiugby Union was held last evening, Mr.-George Dixon presiding. There were also present: Messrs. \Y. Galbrait.li, 11. Kelly, M. Crorabie, J. 11. Lauguton, J. Wallburton, li. .M. Isaacs, and J. D. Avery, sccrutarj. The secretary announced that it had been arranged that all of the members of tho New Zealand team now in Australia could have the necessary extra week's leave in the event of tho tour being extended for another week, 'lhe manager of the team had been odviseu to tho above effect.
■\Vm. Russell, suspended by tho Otago Union for alleged rough play, appealed against tho suspension oil tho ground that tho union had 110 power to suspend a player 011 the report ol a spectator, when the player had not been reported by the referee. It was decided that the appeal could not be upheld., as tho Olago Union had acted in accordance with its bylaws. The Otago Union appealed against tho decision of the Management'Conunittte in upholding the appeal of L. M. 'l'ansey, who had. been suspended by the OUigo Union for striking an opposing player. In this case the player was nut reported by ti'.e referee, but admitted having 6truck his opponent, during the course of his evidence at the inquiry into the -case of a player reported by. tho referee. Tho Otago Union urged that the player, having admitted that he struck a bhnv, they thefcf'ore had to take action, asked 'that the appeal be forwarded to the English Union, as tho decision of the Appeal Council would be n foregone contlusion. "That last rofcrenco is a very indiscreet one," said one member; and another added, "It's dirt—that's what I 'think."
It was decided to forward the appeal -on to tho Appeal Council. The secretary was instructed to write to Otago expressing regret that that union should (suggest that the decision of tho Appeal was a foregone conclusion before it had been .considered by that body. A statement oKreceipts and expenditure in connection with tho tour of tho Sydney "University teatn last season was submitted, and showed a debit of ,£63 j!Bs. 10d., which amount, it was stated, ;had been met. by the Sydney University. The Hawke's Bay Union asked if arrangements could be made for tho American University team to play a match at Napier. It was decided to reply that itinio would not permit of a match being [played at Napier. Tho American visitors will arrivo in Wellington from Sydney on July 13, and will play matches
under:—At Wellington, July 10; at /Danedin, July 20; at Christchurch, July '2.1; at Auckland, July 30. A fifth match /will be played at Palmerston on July 27, tif satisfactory terms can be arranged with the Manawatu Union. The Wainganui Union is also to bo asked for Uenns for this match. .
The Otago and .Southland Unions forwarded the names of several players who had been disqualified. It was decided to wake tho disqualifications general. The Wellington Rugby. Union forwarded a copy of the evidence which led thr-m to suspend'J. Marshall, of tho Melrose isenior team, until tho eud of the first iround -(four weeks) for striking a St. James piaj*er at the close of the MelroseSt. James' match,' played at the Hutt. After the evidence had been read by the secretary a general discussion ensued. Mr. Laughton thought it was a peculiar thing that these two men should bo •called before th* union and yet no outside evidence had been solicited by thi: .union. It seemed to him that the' Wellington Union had not made sufficient inquiry into the case. It certainly appeared to have been a slipshod inquiry. The report of the evidence showed plainly that the inquiry had not been carried »out as it should have been. Mr. Galbraith: The question is whether ve are satisfied .that proper inquiry has i been .made** Voices: That is so. The chairman said that in the fa n e of the evidence it appealed to him that the sentence wa« a most extraordinary one. If there was a paucity of evidence as suggested .by Mr. Laughton that was the ,'ault of the players concerned. ✓ Mr. Laughton said it was the duty of the Wellington Union to obtain all the ovidenco they could get to deai the matter up. If they did this, and found 'Marshall guilty, the sentence was, in his opinion, quite inadequate. The chairman thought that if there was outside evidence to be obtained it should have beep called. Mr. Crombie moved that the matter bo referred back to the Wellington Union with instructions that the evidence of person* who witnessed the assault, oilier than those called by Marshall, be taken. The motion was lost on the casting vote of the chairman. On the m-itim of Mr. Galbraith, seconded by Mr. AVallburton, it was decided ■ that Marshall should be disqualified for. 'two years from the date-of the oHeiicc. ■ BANSEY MUCH INJURED. ' (By . Telegraph.—lJre'ss Association.) Duneriin, June 23. Private advice states that Dmusey was fio badly spikfd in tho first inatch against New .South Wales as to incapacitate him for tho rest of the Maori footballers' tour. Borrie (five-eighths) and R. Ongley (centre three-quarters) were nominated •to represent Otago University in tho Australasian team against the Americans ■.at Sydney. AUCKLAND-WELLINGTON MATCH. , (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) Auckland, June 23. Mr. V. Langsford, secretary of the Auckland Rugby Union, has received a ° wire from Mr. Talbot, secretary of the Wellington Rugby Union, asking if August 20 would be suitable for the annual match "between Auckland and Wellington. The question will conic up before tho Auckland Committee at its next meeting. AUSTRALIAN FOOTBALL. Eric Cnllen. Ward, an ex-pupil of Fort Street Model Public School, Sydney, and tho winner of the .£IOO travelling prize which was offered hist year by Mr. R. A. Munro King to -'he boy who could go to California and commence Australian football in the schools there, writes to Sydney that he is veil and hard at / vrork.
