Thomson, S.M., at the Court yesterday morning, William Riddler, Cowdrey,." and Halhet wero oharged with stealing twelve bags of wool from Messrs. Wilson Bros.' shed near Halcombe. Arthur 1!. Spork, wool buyer, stated that Riddler had sold certain wool to him.(twelve bags), and was paid by cheque. Riddler stated that he had bought tho wool from Maoris at Onepuhi, and gave tho namo of William Wilson. Witness found a krtifo and bunch of string in ono of tho bags, awl ; beforo Riddler left, lie asked whose it was. Accused replied that lie thought that it was his man's. He put the knife in a sack, hung it om tho wall, and remarked that he would call for it at 3 o'clock. The knife was used for. trimming sheeps' feot, ajid that produced was the same. Riddler did not call, and, later, tho police took possession of it. In answer to the Bench, Sergeant Bowden said that tho accused had been eonviotod on minoroffences, but on nothing involving dishonesty. The magistrate said that ho dould not look on the offences as tho outcome of a mere drinking bout. After taking the wool at night, accused had gone to Feilding and sold it. Ho must have known what he was doing. He (the magistrate), would inflict a fine of £20, with £6 12s. witnesses' expenses, in default one month's imprisonment. The cheque for £11 195." 7d. would have to bo refunded.
