THE REASON WHY.
RAILWAY VOLUNTEERS AND THE PARADE. An official explanation has been made with reference to the notice by which employees at the Potono workshops were informed that if any of them being volunteers wished to attend the function yesterday they would not be paid in the afternoon, whilst they were off duty. It. is now stated that the notice was not issued until after an officer of tho Defence Department had inquired whether the volunteers at the workshops would bo allowed' to attend the parade. Tho Railway Department (continues the official reply) holds that it would not bo fair to its men in tho workshops in other centres if the Petone employees were allowed a holiday every time some public function took place in Wellington, as there were more functions hero than elsewhere owing to the fact that it was tho seat of Government.
